Wooded Ridges and Plateau (North Somerset)
This area has the highest concentration of woodland in the region, including ancient woodland, and so is a priority for improved woodland management for wildlife and better connecting existing woodland. This would help create an ecologically robust network of woodland and wooded habitats along the ridges, and would benefit a number of woodland species that are found here, including dormice and woodland butterflies.
SSSIs that are not in good condition are a particular priority for improved management, including Leigh Woods, and King’s Wood and Urchin Wood SSSI. Removing and avoiding the spread of invasive species such as rhododendron Ponticum, cherry laurel and cotoneaster is also crucial to ensuring the future health of woodlands.
The area’s proximity to Bristol, Nailsea, Portishead and Clevedon means that greater recreational access would benefit local communities, but would need to be well managed to avoid negative impacts on wildlife. Recreational pressure is a particular issue for Avon Gorge Woodlands SSSI, as is poor air quality.

Delivering the priorities for nature recovery is particularly important in the mapped Focus Areas for Nature Recovery. ‘Landscape recovery’ measures, which will have the biggest impact on nature recovery, are particularly relevant in these Focus Areas.
