Wellow Valley

The steep sides of the Wellow Valley offer good opportunities for creation of more nature-rich habitat, ideally resulting in a mix of connected woodland, grassland and mosaic habitats, and focusing on expanding and connecting existing nature-rich sites. This is reflected in the mapping of focus areas.  

The Wellow Brook itself is a priority river for improving ecological status, which would require reducing the overall pollution into the river from urban areas, farming and water treatment works. 

The reversion of arable farming on steep slopes to extensive, wildlife-friendly grazing would help to improve water quality by reducing soil and pollution runoff into the Wellow Brook, while benefiting nature.

Priorities for nature recovery

Delivering the priorities for nature recovery is particularly important in the mapped Focus Areas for Nature Recovery. ‘Landscape recovery’ measures, which will have the biggest impact on nature recovery, are particularly relevant in these Focus Areas.

There are more and better-connected species-rich lowland calcareous grasslands on limestone soils that support specialist pollinator and insect populations, including the small blue, marsh fritillary, chalkhill blue and grayling butterflies.
